Edificio Andraus is an iconic building located on the corner of Avenida São João with Rua Pedro Américo in Republic district, São Paulo, Brazil. Its distinct shape and height that reaches 115 metres (32 floors) make the building recognizable from afar.
On February 24, 1972 the Andraus Building caught fire which consumed the entire building and caused the deaths of 16 people, leaving additional 330 injured. Among the dead were Paul Jürgen Pondorf, President of Henkel Multinationals and Ottmar Flick, one of Henkel’s executive officers. Henkel corporate office was in the building.
It is believed that the fire was caused by an overload of an electrical system.
Nice vintage footage, but no sound. Notice the type of coffins Brazilians used in 1972 – not much has changed.
