On the dawn of Wednesday, December 18th, several inhabitants of the Pão de Açúcar district in Taquaritinga do Norte, state of Pernambuco – Brazil, were alarmed by a fire in one of the residences. It all happened on the Rua Presidente Getúlio Vargas street, where a woman by the name of Lúcia da Silva Honório set her own house on fire, with a child also inside. It is reported that she suffered from severe depression and thought she could end her ongoing pain by ending her life. It is unknown if the child was related to her.
Neighbors and firemen quickly raced to the scene and managed to put out the flames, however, 50 year old Lúcia was already dead. The child was able to run away from the fire unharmed.
The fact that some individuals are willing to put the lives of people, and in this case even worst, a child, in danger, in their moments of dispair, is quite disturbing. One could argue that a person suffering from severe depression has no awareness of his/her actions, but does that lessen the consequences that could have arose if the child had died? Just another example of how detrimental the human species can be.
